Assignment One: Kit & Instructions

During class did a class activity to create three different drawing based on only written and verbal instructions with no visuals. This exercise showed us just how difficult it is to create a set of specific instructions in order to create a specific outcome. Here are the three drawings we made.

There were flaws within the directions given that made students create different outcomes. Next we had to choose and create on in 3d. I initially chose the last one with inc splatters, however, I thought that my idea for the first one with the question mark resembling shape was stronger. I started with the idea of making pillars that were at different distances that from the side would not look recognizable. I wanted the final outcome to come together once you stood in the front of the piece. I think something that helped me create a successful piece and kit for someone to make was the fact that I assembled the original model and kit at the same time. I also tried to keep the amount of work the kit maker had to do at a minimum. Therefore, I created the platform and pre-cut the cardboard pieces. Here are pictures of the instructions I created for my kit which I kept very straight forward.

Here are images of my piece compared to what was made by the kit I provided.

Re-creation

I think that the re-creation made by Lina was very close to my original and I am very happy with the outcome. Here are images of the kit that I used to create my piece.

At the beginning of class I did see the original and I could have created mine similar, but, I wanted to stay true to what I read in the instructions. The reason the cones were not formatted in the same way or the balloons was because the instructions did not specify in which orientation I was supposed to attach them. One of the instructions were to make sure that all three cones were touching. I did stay true to this rule however instruction was not given as to the orientation in which the cones had to be. I think that this project could have been improved by leaving me freedom in how I should decorate it although it should have specified more the orientations I should have put things in order to create a re-createion that was similar to the original. Overall I enjoyed this project and it really reminded me that we have to realize the countless amount of interpretations people can have on something, therefore, if you want something done in a specific way you need to be carefully specific in how you explain yourself.
